MarsEdit 2.0 Is Out!

September 4th, 2007

Wow … I thought I’d try something new this time and release a product in “the wee hours.” So I put all the pages up live late last night, thinking they would be there in case anybody saw them.

Then the little “cash register” noise on my email started going off. Nice! The reaction to the public release was almost immediate, so I couldn’t go to sleep quite as instantly as planned. When I finally did grab some shuteye, I woke up to a world on fire with MarsEdit joy!

Err, let’s just say, people were ready for this upgrade, and so far, they seem to be really loving it.

Read the What’s New page for MarsEdit 2, to get a sense for what the major changes are in this revision.

Visit the MarsEdit Home Page to download a copy if you haven’t tried it yet!

I’m really excited to be able to share the app with all of you, after several months of hard work.

Congratulations Daniel on the 2.0 release. Its never easy to get a new release out, and you’ve done a great job with the new UI. The new store is great too.

Heh, on a side note, I have a cash register sound in my email for sales notifications too. I use the one from Pink Floyd’s “Money”. Did you use the same?

  2. Michael Flower Says:

It was a pleasure to see the 2.0 release (I have been following the beta trials but wasn’t of much help to you; I’m too much the novice). I upgraded immediately.

    Great piece of work.

  3. Christopher Jones Says:

It looks like you’ve done a marvelous job with MarsEdit 2.0. Congratulations, and please expect to hear that cash register sound again really soon:-)

  4. Manton Reece Says:

Congrats on 2.0, and here’s to much-deserved upgrade sales. It’s looking great so; can’t wait to see where you take it next.

(And why didn’t I ever think of the cash register sound?)

  5. Joe Goh Says:

“We sat in the conference room and hooked up the big TV to one of the Indys, so that we could sit around in the dark and watch the FTP download logs scroll by. jg hacked up an impromptu script that played the sound of a cannon shot each time a download successfully completed. We sat in the dark and cheered, listening to the explosions.” – http://www.jwz.org/gruntle/nscpdorm.html

Manton: I had my cash register chime running since 1.0, and its been a great morale booster on some Dark Days. Its pretty easy to set up too in Mail.app. OTOH, I think the cannon-thing is a bit too much.

  6. James Says:

I’m loving the flickr integration and the tweaked UI.

Nice work and I’ll be setting your cash register ringing again later :)

  7. Michael Larocque Says:

So who made the cash register ring first? :)

  8. Daniel Jalkut Says:

Michael, you were fast but not fast enough :) Believe it or not you were #7 :)

  9. Joe Cheng Says:

It’s the best part about making software, isn’t it?

    Congrats on ME 2.0!

  10. foljs Says:

    Congrats for the new release…

Flickr integration, for one, is great.

In fact, I only have one major gripe that keeps me from using it. Since Blogger converts my line breaks to [br] tags, whenever I try to edit an older post (which I do, a lot) it comes off as a large chunk of html text with no line breaks or anything.

Since Blogger handles the newline to [br] conversion, couldn’t Mars Edit reformat the text on the fly, converting the [br]’s of retrieved posts into actual new lines and then re-feed it to Blogger like that?

As I see it, the exact same problem will surface when using Markdown in Mars Edit an then wanting to re-edit your post.

  11. Daniel Jalkut Says:

foljs: yeah the issue with Blogger is definitely high on my list of things to come up with a workaround for. I was hoping for a while that they would alter the way they add those ‘s to the content, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

I hope to come up with a workaround soon, even if it’s something as crude as converting back to newlines for Blogger edits.

  12. Miguel Marques Says:

    Yeah!
Nice one! I’m upgrading right now :D

Any chance of enabling Gallery2 support (like flickr’s)?

  13. Daniel Jalkut Says:

Miguel: I think Gallery2 support could work but I might like to change the structure of the app so it’s more plug-in based before I support too many more services. It would be nice to be able to let other people contribute support for whatever they want to use.

  14. Mathias Says:

Congrats! MarsEdit 2.0 is looks awesome. I’m off to buy my upgrade ;)

  15. Miguel Marques Says:

Daniel: nice! I just wish it could work because I stopped using flickr in favour of my own Gallery2. I might go back to flickr for some things… anyway, it rocks! :D

  16. Daniel Says:

    MarsEdit 2 looks great.

Heh, I purchased MarsEdit 1 day before the minimum free upgrade date. Just my like. :)

  17. Daniel Says:

I meant “just my luck” luck. I hate spelling mistakes.

  18. artypop Says:

    Soooooo cool !

Thanks for this release, flickr integration is great, the new UI is really nice !

  19. Peter Karlberg Says:

I have been using Mars Edit for a long time and it works well together with Typo (my blog-software) when I set the software to Movable typ. After upgrading to 2.0 there is no longer any keywords, strange and I wonder why.

    Otherwise it looks great!!!!

  20. Peter Karlberg Says:

Sorry – did not look around. Found Keywords:-)

Thanks for the reply. A simple solution that would make it usable (for me, at least) is if MarsEdit could just “format” the html of the post in the edit window, with proper spaces and newlines.

I mean, if one has to live with the html that Blogger spurts, with [br] and
all, we could at least see it “pretty printed”, with MarsEdit taking automatically care for the proper html nesting. My issue with the [br /] showing when editing Blogger posts, has mostly to do with the fact that they appear as a big messy dump of html (whereas the raw newlines added some strucure to this).

If MarsEdit could ensure that every [br /] get’s its own line, or that block
level html elements are nested a tab inside, etc (basically, something like passing it through Tidy will do), that would be totally workable.

Yes, I have tried this a while ago with some previous Mars Edit version, as soon as I spotted in
    the forum.

Unfortunately, it messes utf-8 greek characters. Don’t know why that is.

  24. Daniel Jalkut Says:

foljs: will you email me some example of greek characters that get messed up by the script? support at red-sweater.com

  25. Jeff Says:

just used the markup editor in ME 2.0 for the first time. my god is it slick and easy-to-use. nice work!
