MarsEdit 4.4.5: Dark Mode Fixes & More

October 30th, 2020

MarsEdit 4.4.5 is now available on the MarsEdit site and the Mac App Store.

This update comes hot on the heels of 4.4.4 to address a little glitch with changes I made to the Main Window’s post preview area. Depending on the blog preview template, text might appear in that view with the wrong color in Dark Mode. As it happened I had a couple other bug reports come in over the past couple days, so I was able to squeeze in fixes for those, too.

Complete list of changes for this release:

  • Fix a bug with MarsEdit 4.4.4 that caused the main window preview colors to be wrong in Dark Mode
  • Fix a bug where Movable Type posts with “more tag” content had the extended content duplicated
  • Fix a bug that caused the Rich Editor colors to sometimes not update when switching between Dark and Light Mode

Brendan Emmett Quigley Exclusive: Splotched

October 30th, 2020

Earlier this year, before the pandemic changed everything, my friend Joe Cabrera proposed that I get more involved in the American crossword solving enthusiasts’ scene, by sponsoring a crossword puzzle to be printed and distributed at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. I thought it was a great idea, and agreed to find a skilled crossword maker to do the job.

The very first person I contacted was Brendan Emmett Quigley, an accomplished Boston-area puzzler whose work has appeared in a huge variety of publications including The New York Times, AV Club, LA Times, and many, many others. To my delight, he agreed to construct a puzzle, and to do it in time for the tournament, to be held in March, in Stamford, CT.

Although Brendan followed through and created a fabulous puzzle, the Covid-19 pandemic soon put an end to our dreams of printing and distributing the puzzles at the tournament. At first, the event was postponed to September, so I thought I’d hold on to the puzzle in the vain hope I’d be able to share it then. But of course the postponed dates didn’t end up working out either.

At this point the tournament will not occur until next April, at the earliest, and I’m tired of sitting on this puzzle! I’m delighted to share it with you all in Across Light format, which can be solved with a variety of apps on many platforms. Of course, if you’re using a Mac, I’d tend to think you should use Black Ink, which is free to use indefinitely, and comes with a 14 day trial for all its premium features.

Thanks so much to Joe for the idea of doing this, and to Brendan for helping me out with the puzzle! I hope you all enjoy solving it.

MarsEdit 4.4.4: Anti-Flickering Preview and Bug Fixes

October 27th, 2020

MarsEdit 4.4.4 is now available on the MarsEdit site and on the Mac App Store.

This update addresses a minor but annoying “flash of white” in the main window’s preview when moving between posts. I took this oppportunity to revise the main window preview to use Apple’s modern WebKit view, so be on the lookout for any changes in the main window that are unexpected.

Complete list of changes for this release:

  • Reduce flickering appearance of main window preview while switching between posts
  • Relative HTML Fragments can now be used within preview window e.g. to jump to different tagged parts of a post
  • Fix a bug that prevented blogs from being reordered in the blogs list
  • Fix a bug where changing preferences caused an open post editor to be activated
  • Fix a bug where text after the “More” tag in a Micro.blog post would be stripped
  • Fix a bug that caused some HTML elements to be made self-closing when they shouldn’t be
  • Fix a visual discrepancy in the height of the status bars at bottom of main window
